Well, the Puerto Rican island of Vieques might be the island for you. The island of Vieques is the perfect destination for a relaxed and secluded getaway. With a population of only 10,000 people, Vieques is a wonderful place for a peaceful retreat into the tropics.
The currency of the island is the United States dollar so if you are from the United States, no more worrying about the hassle of converting your currency. There are plenty of fun things to do on this special island. One can observe beautiful bioluminescent lights in the waters on the famous Mosquito Bay known for its natural elegance. Vieques is also known for its’ abundance of beautiful secluded beaches where one can relax undisturbed.
There are plenty of food options as well with most resteraunts serving authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. Another aspect about Vieques that makes it unique is that there are hundreds of wild horses that live across the countryside so if you enjoy looking at horses, then Vieques is the island for you. There is also a variety of snorkeling and kayaking companies that will allow you to travel to and observe the most beautiful beaches the island has to offer in the best way possible. The average daily hotel cost for a couple is $71 a night which is not too expensive if you ask me. There are multiple muesuems that detail the unique history of the island with the preserved Spanish fort museum known as “El FortÃn De Conde Mirasol” being an absolute must visit for history nerds. Vieques has an extremely rich 4000 year old cultural history with the island having been inhabited by the French, Taino indians, English, Americans, and Spanish. Overall this island is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth the trouble of visiting.
Martinique History/Politics Martinique is an overseas Territorial collectivity of France. It has the same political status as homeland regions in France. The island was initially occupied by Arawak and Carib natives. It is believed that the first Arawaks arrived in Martinique from South America in 130 AD. When Mt Pelee erupted in 295 AD, it resulted in the devastation of the island's population. While the Arawaks did return and repopulate the island around 400 AD, the Caribs arrived in 600 AD and they annihilated the Arawak population. The Caribs settled on the island for a couple of centuries after this. During his fourth voyage in 1502, Martinique was discovered by Christopher Columbus. The indigenous Indians referred to the island as “the island of flowers”.
